Guild Hall, Mel Brooks, Lifetime Achievement
March 5th, 2008

It was one exciting night at the Rainbow Room in New York City where the heads of East Hampton’s Guild Hall presented Mel Brooks, Angela LaGreca, Joe Pintauro, David Salle, and Robert F.X. Sillerman with lifetime achievement awards. The party was a smashing success, with Alec Baldwin and Mercedes Ruehl saying hello to everyone amidst the art decco styled Rainbow Room. Mel Brooks, looking better then ever, gave an acceptance speech that had the audience nearly falling over from laughing so hard. Second in line for best speech was Robert F.X. Sillerman, who joked about how the main reason he had won his award was because him and Mel Brooks work together with Young Frankenstein. “You can call Mel directly at 1-800-Mel-Brooks, he answers every call,” said Sillerman, the guy who pretty much owns all of the rights to American Idol, Elvis and Mohammad Ali, and has donated millions to the revamping of Guild Hall.

All of us here are just can’t wait to see the new rennovations done courtesy of East Hampton builder Ben Krupinski, who donated over a million dollars worth of construction to revamping the theatre.

How Can You Not Love SJP?
February 26th, 2008

unknown.jpeg

Why is Sarah Jessica Parker so likeable and such a hard working Hollywood actress? None of us here can tell, but we all just love her. We just heard today that East Hamptoite Sarah Jessica Parker is heading back to Broadway even after all of the work she has put into the new Sex And The City Movie! Sarah is going to be Italian flight attendant in the show Boeing Boeing, starting up in April at NYC’s Longacre Theater.

What is the secret to her figure? None of us know, but we’re sure it has something to do with the beaches of Amagansett.

Nothing beats local theatre in the Hamptons and some of the best comes from the The Hampton Theatre Company in Quogue. On January 10 the Hampton Theatre Company will kick off the new year with David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Glengarry Glen Ross.” The comedy is about the ridiculous competition between real estate salesmen.

You can check out these local characters at Quogue Community Hall on Jessup Avenue. These days real estate people could use a good laugh and David Mamet has the medicine.

Call 631-653-8955 for tickets or visit www.hamptontheatre.org

Saturday’s Baystreet Bash

This past Saturday Bay Street held their Summer Gala Benefit Bash and it was one of the summer’s most magical evenings. Set to the enchanting theme of “East meets West,” the night took place at Harding Farm on Lumber Lane in Bridgehampton. Not only does this occasion mark Bay Street’s sixteenth year of production, but it was hosted by comedian and actor, Richard Kind from hit shows Mad About You, Spin City and HBO’s hit series produced by Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
This talented actor brought his dry sense of humor to the Gala just prior to appearing opposite Charles Busch in Bay Street’s production of the hilarious satire of 1940s thrillers, The Lady in Question. It’s fair to say that the Gala will benefit from the plans for this production as well as its production of Turandot: The Rumble for the Ring - a new rock opera, jam-packed with some of the most talented arias in opera set to a rock beat, in other words, one-of-a-kind - which will be playing through August 5.
In true Bay Street style the silent and live “fantasy” auction included exciting packages such as a Princess Tea Party with Julie Andrews, dinner for 4 at Rao’s, a fantasy golf package, a luxury vacation in Mexico including airfare, a custom Italian kitchen, house seats for the opening of Mel Brook’s Broadway show Young Frankenstein, fabulous works of art by world acclaimed East Hampton artist Randy Rosenthal, jewelry, memorabilia, sports packages and much more. Not to mention a kayak trip with Alec Baldwin.
It was certainly a night to remember and many celebrities were spotted including B. Smith and Dan Gasby, and Emma Walton Hamilton among others. Not only an elegant affair but an event where all the proceeds help to keep their programs strong and supported.

I love Bay Street.

Turnandot At Bay Street. Let’s Get Ready To Rumble
July 16th, 2007

“Turandot: The Rumble for the Ring” is disposing of the Hamptons’ coveted artistic pretentions and bringing some fun to town. Created by Diane Paulus and Randy Weiner of the critically acclaimed “The Donkey Show,” The rock-opera-wrestling show based on classic fairytales and former opuses premiered at Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theatre this month. The story is best known from the 1920s Puccini opera, which “Rumble for the Ring” resembles. The show centers around a beautiful and badass woman, Turandot, whose father commissions a televised match in the ring for wild wrestlers to win her hand in marriage. But an “audience member” who was all heart but is not too big on brains or brawn falls so deeply in love with the yellow-and-black catsuit-striped prize that he enters the ring himself.

The love story, while perhaps underdeveloped, has its heart in the right place. As inane as “Turandot” may initially appear, its ability to give a good time kept me smiling.

A Movie Celebration in Southampton

Last Saturday was the after party for “Fierce People” hosted by The Cinema Society And The Wall Street Journal at a private residence in Southampton. It was quite the Hamptons scene, with locals Kelsey Grammer and Camille Grammer along with Howard Stern and Beth Ostrosky showing their support for the movie and also their support for great Hamptons parties. The private residence also enjoyed the gorgeous presence of Heather Graham. As Bart Simpson would say, “Ay Carumba!”

GET PSYCHED FOR SICKO
June 24th, 2007

sicko.jpg

Last night was the premiere of Michael Moore’s new film, SICKO.

The film debuted at the East Hampton movie theater, followed by a private party at Prime 103.

Though viewers felt inevitably stirred, maybe even depressed, after the film (which focuses on the atrocious healthcare system in the US), the general consensus was that Moore has written, directed and produced yet another important, original, engaging film.

Plus, he has lots of fabulous friends.

Heather Graham and her boyfriend Charles Ferri sat next to me. She looked spectacular in her Pucci, but like all women in the theater, she was so unbearably cold that she contemplated leaving mid-movie. Instead her boyfriend bought some popcorn, which they ate rather loudly (I love her, but it’s true!).

Harvey Weinstein was in the audience, as was Chevy Chase. And of course, the crowd consisted of Hamptons-centric celebrities like Christie Brinkley and Tommy Hilfiger. Also there: LeeLee Sobieski, Candice Bergen, Steven Gaines and Jane Rosenthal.

See the movie. But you might want to bring your passport. It will make you insanely angry at our country. If not the passport, at least bring a sweater.

“Am I S.A.G.? No, I’m from East Hampton”
April 30th, 2007

Posted By David Lion Rattiner

I decided to see how I’d fair at an open casting call at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. The casting call on Saturday was for actors, actresses and singers interested in performing for shows that will be held at the Sag Harbor theater for the summer season. I got wind of this info from my fellow acting friend, Joe Winchell, who works for his families marina in Sag Harbor. Joe and I are friends from doing community theater together last year at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall in East Hampton, and Joe has been in plays in Los Angeles and in commercials as well.

“Oh yeah,” Joe said to me, “Just about anybody can go to the call it’s a lot of fun.”

“Really? It sounds so exciting,” I said, “Bay Street is the real deal.”

I had caught the acting bug, you all know what I’m talking about right? I quickly headed down to Bay Street for the casting call, and was greeted by a wonderful woman who asked me to fill out a form. She was a very serious woman, so I presented myself as a serious actor. I figured if I’m going to act, I might as well start acting like it.

“Okay Mr. Rattiner, can you tell me if you’re Sag?”

“Am I Sag? No, I grew up in East Hampton but I have a place in Montauk now.”

“No I mean the union. Are you with the union?”

What is she talking about? The boating union? Did she just ask me if I was from Sag Harbor? Does she think I’m a fisherman?

“No, I don’t think I’m with a union. Should I be?”

“Right this way sir.”

Of course, I later learned that she was talking about the Screen Actors Guild. I have a feeling this might have ruined my chances of being a Bay Street actor.

They brought me back stage of Bay Street which was really cool and I met the casting directors who told me to do my monologue. Needless to say, I didn’t have one of those. But I did have a song memorized, so I belted out “Namely You” from the hit Broadway show “Li’l Abner” (which by the way is being put up this weekend at Pierson School in Sag Harbor with the Springs Community Theater. I play the role of Li’l Abner).

Who knows if they were impressed or not. Maybe I’ll stick with going to shows at Bay Street and leave the singing for the car.
