Crazy Storm On Sunday
June 12th, 2008

Here is a shot by Kathy Rae of the amazing storm that took place Sunday that nearly had the whole East End turn upside down. The storm lasted about a half hour, but it was one heck of a half hour!

Check out the lightening! This photo was taken on Dune Road. Where were you during the storm?

Sexually Confused Nightlife News

Sen Lounge, the sexy, exclusive and city-esque nightclub next to the sushi restaurant, is planning on marketing their Monday nights as either Gay Night or Singles Night. The owner’s brother, Jesse, who’s also the restaurant and club’s manager, said they are still debating which way to go, since the Sen brand attracts such a large demographic of both straight and gay Hamptonites. Until Monday night has an official sexual orientation, tell us what you think Sen Lounge should do?

Controversy Over Southampton Movie
June 4th, 2007

Sunday night, Alan Alda stood behind me at the Southampton movie theater. We were both buying tickets to see Knocked Up with Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogan. Unfortunately I lost him before the film began (damn gelato cravings!).

It would have been great to find Alda afterwards, and get his feedback on the film, because it’s turning out to be quite controversial. The overriding theme is that women are high-maintenance, manipulative, impossible, irrational, hypersensitive, emotional-wrecks … and men are rude, crude, hairy, smelly, immature, overweight and addicted to porn, pot, poker and fantasy baseball.

It’s not really my style to overthink films. Especially this one, which - despite the stupid stereotypes - had me smiling from start to finish. For those who want to dig deeper into the world of Knocked Up, there’s an interesting piece on Slate today. For the rest of us, lets just hope life doesn’t imitate art.

Where Are You, Sobering Up, I Mean, Summering?
May 31st, 2007

Politically correct or not, everyone knows “going to rehab” is as trendy as Havaianas, James Blunt and going green.  But could a rehab center be launching in our own backyard?  Yesterday, the New York Post reported that Michael Lohan (father/enabler of Lindsay Lohan) and Steven Baldwin (ex-actor/Jesus-lover) are joining forces to create a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center out East.   As if rehab isn’t romanticized enough, now it’s being marketed as a relaxing retreat for the rich and famous when they’re sick of going to Nello’s, and Naturopathica is all booked up. I don’t mean to trivialize the curse of addiction, but I feel this is just another PR stunt pulled by someone who should be focussed on his own family.  Plus, I really don’t think sobering-up on the way to Pink Elephant is part of the 12-step program.  But maybe I’m just too hungover to get it.

No Door

For some unknown reason, I get invited to a lot of things.  When are people going to realize that I’m a homebody? I guess, when I stop partying so much.  Anyway, one of my issues with events out here is that you never know what’s private or not.  I tend to shlep everyone to everything, only to find out that I was invited solo (or maybe with a plus one). Then I have to disinvite all my peeps,  and look like a royal biatch.  Typical!   Like this “HYT ME ESTATE” opening party on Sunday night, with DJ Cassidy and Bloody Social (pretend you know who they are, that’s what I do).  Private or not? A PR company is throwing the event, which makes me think they want a big crowd and lots of hype.  But then again, this public relations firm is notoriously exclusive.  The owner, who will remain nameless, once let ME into her apartment party, but not my boyfriend of 5 years — because he was too “Wallstreet-ish!”  What do you think…does this shindig have an open door policy… or don’t even think about it?

“Am I S.A.G.? No, I’m from East Hampton”
April 30th, 2007

Posted By David Lion Rattiner

I decided to see how I’d fair at an open casting call at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. The casting call on Saturday was for actors, actresses and singers interested in performing for shows that will be held at the Sag Harbor theater for the summer season. I got wind of this info from my fellow acting friend, Joe Winchell, who works for his families marina in Sag Harbor. Joe and I are friends from doing community theater together last year at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall in East Hampton, and Joe has been in plays in Los Angeles and in commercials as well.

“Oh yeah,” Joe said to me, “Just about anybody can go to the call it’s a lot of fun.”

“Really? It sounds so exciting,” I said, “Bay Street is the real deal.”

I had caught the acting bug, you all know what I’m talking about right? I quickly headed down to Bay Street for the casting call, and was greeted by a wonderful woman who asked me to fill out a form. She was a very serious woman, so I presented myself as a serious actor. I figured if I’m going to act, I might as well start acting like it.

“Okay Mr. Rattiner, can you tell me if you’re Sag?”

“Am I Sag? No, I grew up in East Hampton but I have a place in Montauk now.”

“No I mean the union. Are you with the union?”

What is she talking about? The boating union? Did she just ask me if I was from Sag Harbor? Does she think I’m a fisherman?

“No, I don’t think I’m with a union. Should I be?”

“Right this way sir.”

Of course, I later learned that she was talking about the Screen Actors Guild. I have a feeling this might have ruined my chances of being a Bay Street actor.

They brought me back stage of Bay Street which was really cool and I met the casting directors who told me to do my monologue. Needless to say, I didn’t have one of those. But I did have a song memorized, so I belted out “Namely You” from the hit Broadway show “Li’l Abner” (which by the way is being put up this weekend at Pierson School in Sag Harbor with the Springs Community Theater. I play the role of Li’l Abner).

Who knows if they were impressed or not. Maybe I’ll stick with going to shows at Bay Street and leave the singing for the car.

Baldwin Defends Himself And Apologizes
April 25th, 2007

Posted By David Lion Rattiner

In an article on msn.com, Hamptons actor Alec Baldwin apologizes for his remarks to his daughter. The bitter custody battle and a recent tape recording has drawn a great amount of attention to the actor. He is upset that the tape was released and apologizes for getting angry at his daughter. The tape should not have been made public because the person that gets hurt the most is the child. You can read the article by clicking here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18233560/
