What In The World?
July 24th, 2008

Does anybody know what the heck this thing is that washed ashore in Montauk? The “CREATURE” has made the papers! We got this in an e-mail this morning!

“My sister emailed me a picture of some strange looking animal that supposedly washed up on the beach in montauk. Rumor has it that it came from plum island…

As soon as i saw the picture i was immediately fascinated because ive never seen anything like it in my life and wanted to know more about it, but no one seems to know anything. i thought at first it could have been a photoshopped picture but you can actually see a fly on its back. I searched all over the internet and the papers and didn’t find anything except some surfer message board that posted the same picture and some guy said it was a “plataweisel” but upon further investigation i realized the guy was trying to be funny and copied and pasted the description of a bottle nosed dolphin changing the name to “plataweisel”. i dont believe there is any such thing. Some other guy on the same message board had this to say:

“listen guys I heard some inside (privileged) information from the EH Police Dept. The animal carcass was found on the North Bar. This particular animal has been known to attack surfers, as it usually feeds on seals. This animal is not indigenous to these waters, so it must have been transplanted. There is a very short list of suspects, but the investigation is still in the “young” stages.”

what the hell does that mean? what suspects? and he just said, “the animal” WHAT ANIMAL? WHAT IS IT?!!

I just find it odd that no one seems to know anything and  the fact that it wasn’t in any paper has just got me baffled. I grew up in the hamptons and i know they dont like to put stuff like that in the papers because they dont want to scare the tourists off but I just want to know what this thing is!! Someone said a raccoon but i compared a picture of a raccoon skull to the photo and it wasn’t even close. I thought it looked a little bit like a turtle without the shell but i have no photos of that to compare it to. In any case, i thought it was intriguing enough to send to you guys. I would be greatly appreciative of any insight you may have :D”

CONSPIRACY???

OMG what the hell is that??? We need updates

  2. Kyle Says:

    Ok……that thing looks like a human/dog/seal/something evil. i don’t like this

  3. Matt Says:

It’s photoshopped. You can tell really easily if you zoom in, there’s a lot of inconsistent blur at the lower part of the body, back, and head.

  4. Jon Says:

Thats some kind of turtle without its shell, and i bet being at sea for a while caused it to be that color.

  5. joanne Says:

crude, repulsive, and very bad fodder.
    amend this report

  6. danzig Says:

send it to monsterquest and have the history channel come on down and check it out haha

  7. joe DEX Says:

    it looks like good eatin

  8. Bill Says:

    Hey thats my dog.

  9. derrick Says:

It might not even be that odd of an animal, it looks like it used to have fur and is in the beginning stages of decomposing. If it was in the sea some other animals may have started to feed on it and could have eaten away at some of the mouth and ears. It is possible its a really common animal and is unrecognizable because of the lack of fur and facial features it would have normally. Just a thought.

  10. weirdmtk Says:

The thing that washed ashore at Ditch is a mammalian/reptilian mutant by-product from Plum Island. The territorial Locals aren’t talking, as usual, but those at the scene cannot believe it made the paper (EH Independent) as cameras were apparently confiscated on site.

Montauk’s gotten too weird over the past few years with the ongoing mysterious issues concerning Camp Hero. I don’t want to be afraid of our Government but I’m honestly relieved that I dumped my house out there before the bottom fell out of the real estate market. I hope I’m done…

The Economy can be blamed for some of it, but vacation homes are still selling/renting on the East End…in places other than Montauk. Prime retail locations in Montauk have been vacant for years and established businesses remain on the market.

  12. Monica Says:

looks like a large dog whose front legs were tied with a belt or something

  13. Tim Says:

Oh, Dan - you’re such a prankster….maybe it came from the Montaulk subway system…

  14. bkfujgb Says:

the mystery animal looks like a dead decaying koala bear

  15. Johnnie Hinson Says:

This thing reminds me of a carcass I remember that was floating in the bay close to Newberryport. Thought it might have been a sea turtle that had lost its shell.

This was back in August/September of 1967 while on a fishing trip while I was stationed at New Boston Satelite Tracking Station out of Manchester, NH

  16. griifon Says:

yes i have seen these before they are described in detail by bill cooper in his book behold a pale horse….some of them have wings…it probably escaped let loose from plum island….not good.

  17. jerry.w Says:

How about a house cat? bloated by decomposition with its nose worn down to the bone by wave and sand abrasion.
Is that a piece of cloth on the front legs possibly tied by someone to facilitate its demise.
Lack of hair due to mange?
Note the teeth(carnivorous) and toes on front legs(land based)

    What say ye!?!?

  18. Amy Says:

It looks like a turtle that has lost it’s shell

  19. Bonnie Says:

How big is this thing? There’s really nothign to compare it to for a scale. Are we talking like raccoon or horse sized?

  20. Kelev Says:

Would not be surprised if this is one of the victims, failed Frankenstein experiments inflicted upon animals at Plum Isand. Legalized animal cruelty, hidden and financed by our tax dollars. “The White Coats” are protected to do their bloody, dirty vile torture of animals while the public consumes and demands more products at the expense of unspeakable animal suffering.

  21. Kerry Says:

Okay but where is this thing now?

  22. gtoddv Says:

    It’s a Sea Turtle without it’s shell.

  23. Elena Says:

    VET TECH SAYS:

Looks like a raccoon, cat, or small dog. Size is guessed relative to the size of that fly on the carcass. However, I’m leaning more toward raccoon or cat, because if you look at the front legs, the fur left there looks like it may have been ticked brown/tan and black. Consistent with a raccoon or a tabby/Abyssinian cat. In the back, below the base of the tail, it looks like either a scrotum or the caudal pelvis. On the hind feet, claws are visible. On the forefeet, claws are also visible. The forepaws look to be rather long, which is why I’m more inclined to think raccoon. Also, looking at the remaining hair on the body, it looks brownish and almost has a coarse texture, which continues to make me think raccoon.

The reddish color of the tissue is consistent with decomposition, but I wouldn’t rule out some kind of chemical burn, or even fire. Raccoons are considered pests by some and this one could have been caught in some kind of trap.

  24. Herb Says:

Is it a skinned Kangaroo with its nose/face ripped off?

  25. OmaBecky Says:

A turtle’s backbone is connected to and part of it’s shell. Turtles can’t just slip out of their shells (no matter how many cartoonists have made it happen that way).
This definitely could be photoshopped. Something’s wrong with the fuzzy neck and the back area of the head for sure. Now the CBS News interview with Dan says that the creature has dissappeared and not na,es have been given for any of the people associated with this discovery.

  26. Liz Says:

It’s a racoon that was skinned and part of it’s upper jaw removed. As a member of a family of hunters that’s what a skinned racoon tends to look like, minus the bloating and the decomposition this one has from spending days in salt water. As you can see on its front leg, some skin and fur is left over, because when you skin an animal you pull the fur down towards its feet, peeling it away from the body and giving it an inside-out look.

Sorry if I bursted any bubbbles. :-)

  27. eddie Says:

looks like the aborted love child of two hard partying walll street types

  28. Kal Says:

Not really sure about it being a turtle, wouldn’t surprise me at all if it wasn’t. There are still species that we don’t know about, hell, not that long ago they discovered a squirrel that was thought to be extinct for thousands of years. There’s some weird things out there. A bit annoying that people are freaking out when something new and, in our opinion, odd shows up.

@Matt. The blur isn’t proof of it being photoshoped, I end up with photos that turn out like that (Some parts show up clear, sometimes overly sharp, and other parts are blurry.

  29. Scott the real news Says:

Ok everyone calm down its not a racoon, because clearly it has a beak and the last time i checked “Raccons” dont have beaks. The turtle theory is also incorrect because the shell is part of the turles body so removing the shell would be like removing your back and stomach. The only thing im worried about is the fact the government would hide an animal with such importance. The animal DISAPPEARED? I got to say disappeared is not the word i would use; hidden or stolen would be better words.

Check Plum island, or Area 51.

  30. mike Says:

    i dunno but it looks…………

    delicious.

  31. Tommy Says:

First, the photo is not photoshopped… I work with the two individuals who stumbled upon it and took its picture, I have looked at it the same day on the same point and shoot camera it was taken from, I actually dropped it in the excitement as everyone huddled around to get a look in the bussing station. Second of all, WeirdMTK, you’re stupid… It was washed up on the overlook beach across from the surfside inn and restaurant.. Stop making shit up! FUCK! No camera’s were confiscated, the governments not out to get you!

  32. Al Says:

Its definitely is not a sea turtle without its shell, because a turtle’s shell is part of their skeletal system. Dead turtles are found to include
their shells. Only in cartoons do we see turtles out of their shell. I would send this strange animal to the Museum of Natural History to confirm its identity.

  33. alethia Says:

No idea!, but looks like a pig with an eagle’s head, did you see the one fang it has at the beak? its horrrendous whatever it is.
I wouldn’t be surprised it has something to do with the Bush Administration.

  34. Eagle123 Says:

Looks like a Dead decomposing Lion the hair under the chin could be part of a mane. A Lion? How you ask? The Circus was just in Town People, You do know that the circus is cruel to animals. With PETA up there A$$ what would the Circus do if an Animal just Died, Cant let anyone know, Bound it an dump it in the Ocean, Montauk Isn’t far from Shinnecock. The Timeing is impeccable. Thats a logical Conclusion. However if you want an Illogical Conclusion,

Its John McCain sunbating at the Nude Beach!
    Hhahhahhah!

  35. asdf Says:

download the photo and blow up on the neck area to examine the bit map. it looks blurry and therefore doctored in photoshop.

  36. beth Says:

I saw on the boston news that scientist do not know what it is yet and are testing it.

  37. Person Says:

Its a tortis without a shell.

  38. Dex Says:

This would come from New York.

  39. Rich Says:

That creature seen photographed on the beach is known as a Chupacabra…legend or truth, that is what you have there…

  40. Cat Says:

Hey. I was skimming the google pages and came acrossyours. I was wondering if anyone knew what this was. It was on channel 4 last night but they said it was inclosed information. I need miore information because ina week or teo I’m vacationing in my house in the hamptons and I don’t want another of these things. lol

  41. Matt Says:

It’s definately a large turtle out of it’s shell, judging by the features: eg. beak like nose, short tail.

  42. Matt Says:

    the head looks photoshopped

  43. Eric Says:

    It’s a plataweisel according to surfrats.com

  44. Dro Says:

If this is a carcass of an animal, hasn’t been tinkered with photoshop, then we are looking at something that has never been recorded as a species. There is nothing that I am aware of that could duplicate this animal carcass, even with severe decomposition.

  45. Lilly Says:

i think it looks like a turtle that lost its shell. And then again it looks like a dog. because i mean dogs dont have webed hands as you look clearly you can see webed hands. ad dogs noses arent like a parrots. and its teeth look like sharks and it couldnt be a turtle that lost its shell because turtles dont have teeth they have razor sharp mouths not teeth. its very strandge.

  46. cortney Says:

it couldnt be a turtle. thy have razorr sharp mouths not teeth
    :DDDDDD

  47. buffy Says:

hey, people have been at the beach and witnessed the dam thing, so stop sying its photo shopped..!!!!
yes it loooks to me lie a sea turtle but guess what….

the friggin shell is part of its body so i wont be separated from its shell.. OK!!!

and about the cupabarra hmmm interesting!!!!!WRONG

believe it or not its real… and what people should be worried about is the fact that it has disappeared!!!!

some one was experimenting and it got away.. now the words all over

    look out world.. LOOK OUT…

  48. parker barry Says:

this is no doubt a three toed sloth, the un mistakable claws at the front are quite apparent along with some of the gray fur on the front claws…….daaaawwww!!!!!!

  49. cindi Says:

read revelation chapter 13. does that rng an bells?

  50. Bendi Says:

Why is it that whenever a possible cryptid or unusual specimen is found , no one ever thinks to pick the thing up, put it in a trash bag and put it in the freezer?
Why would someonne come across something like this and take ONE photo?
My first impression is that it is photo-shopped. But I am concerned by the fact that the front limbs seem to be tied together. Whatever this is really a photo of…doctored or not, i feel like it was probably tortured before it died. :(

  51. Sven Izzy Says:

Well, it can’t be a turtle without the shell, since the shell is built into the turtle’s skeleton (they can’t just pop out like in cartoons). And since there’s no evidence of cuts or surgery on the “things”’s back, I’d say we can rule out the “naked turtle theory”.

  52. pinkie Says:

it looks like a dog or acat obviously probobly tortured and skinned and possibly tied up(look at legs) i just watrched this on tv and i had no clue about it before,,i seriuosly think its an animal we cant identify cuz its been dropped off over a bridge after it was probobly killed..and its been spotted twice bty… i think theres more to this story than frigging a photoshopped idea…. really think about it.

  53. pinkie Says:

heres some more on the story i found it on newsday.com i found it interesting

The Bayview Beast: Southold, Long Island.
    October 25th, 2008
On October 17th 2008 at 9:00 AM the Bayview Beast was spotted strolling across a lawn and into the woods in a neighborhood in Southhold, Long Island. A resident who goes by the name of “John” (he wished to withhold his last name) is quoted saying “I pulled up into my drive-way and I could see it plain as day, walking across my neighbors lawn.” “John” is the gentleman that reported his sighting to police authorities.

In the police report, “John” described the cat-like creature to be 5-6 feet long (holy guacamole!) not including the tail, and resembling the features of a mountain lion. Southold Police authorities feel they ” may be onto something” from the report and descriptions given by “John” as Southold Police Chief, Carlisle Cochran Jr. commented on Friday. Chief Cochran further explained that he “doesn’t think it’s running stray in Bayview,” and “has to believe that it’s somebody’s pet that just gets out once in a while.”

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation said investigators have yet to see any sign of mountain lions. They haven’t found any tangible evidence of scat, feces, or any sort of animal remains. Additionally, spokeswoman Aphrodite Montalvo further claimed that mountain lions haven’t been native to Long Island since pre-Colonial times.

Unfortunately, “John” doesn’t have any pictures of the beast. I found Chief Cochran’s theory to be funny. “Hey, it’s just a pet that gets out every now and then, no problem!” Chief, we’re talking about a 5-6 foot (not including tail, of course) “mountain lion” roaming the streets of Long Island. Being that the state Department of Environmental Conservation is performing further investigations, the the Bayview Beast may be real, as “John” now isn’t the only person who feels we have probably cause. Chief, in all seriousness do you think that somebody is housing a 5-6 foot “pet” in a residential neighborhood in Southold? (It’s great with children.) I’m sure “John” and the other neighbors would have noticed the owner walking the beast with a leash on asking wondering what the heck it is.

But hey, it’s just somebody’s pet that gets out once in a while right? Maybe the 5-6 foot beast took a walk into town to enjoy a cup white chocolate mocha at Starbucks and read Newsday? Chief Carlisle Cochran really believes that this is not a stray animal and has been domesticated on Long Island. (I stick by my story!)

And the question still remains, where is the Bayview Beast now

THIS IS HORRIBLE AND SOME SCIENTIST HAS DONE THAT ON PURPOSE THATS WHY YOU WONT FIND ANYTHING ABOUT IT COS ITS NOT REAL ITS SOMEONE MESSING WITH NATURE

  59. Lilster Says:

I think it’s a dog mixed with a bird mixed with a mutated kangaroo, it’s a freak of nature! But if it is gone now then we will never know what it is really because it was probably eaten by now. But if another one ends up in the same place someone has to just PICK IT UP AND TAKE IT TO A SCIENCE CENTER . So there is my opinion!

  60. Anonymous Says:

    what is it.

  61. Dennis Says:

It’s a freak of nature. Thank god its Dead. Legs do not look like turtle legs. Does resemble a dog that was shaved or skinned. Vary discusting, Who ever is resposible should be put away for life.

  62. nigel n n Says:

this was confirmed to be a raccoon ages ago.
it does look it has a beak but its nothing more than the tip of the noise with some teeth missing.

    skull
    paws.
fur ( whats left of it)

    all comes down to racoon.

  63. nigel n n Says:

if you dont belive me look it up on google.
