James H. Simons, a math professor-turned-hedge fund manager, is giving Stony Brook University $60 million, its largest gift ever and the largest gift to any public university in the state.
“The donation will bolster New York’s efforts to become a leader in innovation and excellence in higher education,” said Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who is to formally announce the gift Wednesday morning in New York City, along with university officials and Mr. Simons and his wife, Marilyn.
