New to the Hamptons literary scene is the essential guide to class warfare, otherwise known as The Hamptons Dictionary. Hot off the press and decked in black, red and white, this compilation of terms begs the question, “Do You Speak Hamptonese?” Well, here at Dan’s Papers, we sort of invented it. And we also help to spread the lexical phenomena of the Hamptons each Thursday in our weekly paper (see ad rag n., doorstop n., and Dan’s Papers n.) that you can find across the South Fork, North Fork and even into the streets of New York City.
We couldn’t get enough of this clever book, written by Miles Jaffe and illustrated by Jennett Russell, back in the Editorial Department. So we picked out a few of our favorite terms. Here they are in no particular order.

Au Pair n., 1. An attractive young woman working as a surrogate mother. 2. Nice tits.

Charity Ball n. A photo op.

Cottage n. Diminutive term for one’s McMansion of Pocket Estate in the Hamptons. “We have a cottage on the beach in East Hampton.” See mega-cottage.

Fasod (fa * sahd’) n. An attempt to act sober while totally bombed. “Just take the keys; don’t fall for Billy’s fasod.”

Freeboater adj., n., 1. One who pirates accommodations on board a ship headed to or moored in Sag Harbor, Conscience Point, Three Mile Harbor, etc. 2. A yachting groupie.

What are some of your favorite, Hamptonese terms? Go to www.hamptonsdictionary.com to buy a copy of the book or to submit a word of your own.
